When you have planted out your brassica, cover right away. You can also put down traps for slugs and snails using enviromesh as the cover. This is a very good product and will last for a good few years, it will stop the birds getting into your crops and also the cabbage white butterfly. You could also lay plastic sheeting down and plant though it, this helps in keeping the weeds down and then you do not have to lift off the covers so often. make sure your cover is high enough so your plants can grow and this saves having too make your frame bigger and you only have to do it once.
now is the time of the year to keep on top of your weeding, and i find if you go around with your hoe and get the weeds when they are small this will save you a lot of work, perennial weeds are best taken out try and get as much of the root as you can, do not put on your compost heap but put them in your brown bin if you put them on your compost heap they will regrow, try and not let weeds seed as you end up with loads of work over the coming year and this also helps your fellow plotholders.
